She was already familiar with Ambrosia and knew it was reopening, so we stopped by to see. It looked open, but the door was locked. As we turned to leave a lady opened the door and invited us in. She explained that the restaurant would open the following night and that this night was for family of the owner.
Back in November 2014, my wife and I were the first (of the general public) to eat at Ambrosia's new location on N. College. I had proposed the day before and we decided to celebrate our engagement by dinning out.
Ambrosia is among our favorite restaurants of all time. There is something to satisfy every taste (I'm not a fan of pasta, yet I've found one of my favorite meals). This is our choice for our most special occasions.
We almost turned around and walked out before we were even seated because the host was incredibly rude. When we entered the restaurant, he began to speak and I thought he was on the phone. To our surprise, he was asking us questions while facing the opposite direction and staring at a screen. His attitude didn't get any better as he sat us at our table.
Thankfully our experience improved. Our waiter was helpful and pleasant and the food was good. I may return if a group of friends or family wanted to dine here, but I don't think it's a good dining choice for a date. They try to create some ambiance with low lighting and a fireplace; however the tables are on top of each other in a large open room. Not a very intimate setting.
After letting her know we weren't family, she seated us anyway. We got wonderful service, an amazingly delicious authentic Italian dinner, and a visit to our table by the owner himself, who told us our meal would be free.
Disappointing dining experience this time. The wedding soup tasted old and had no flavor. The veal piccata the same, no capers at all. Maybe new books. I hope it will be fixed. Service was outstanding.
We've returned several times since then and have always received top-notch service and the best Italian food in Indianapolis. Many thanks to Mr. Pizzi for the memories and the food!
Great atmosphere. Great service. Great food. My favorite place in Indy.
