Today the kids and I visited the exhibits and had a wonderful time. The Vernon exhibit was cool and we even had a train ride and got our tickets stamped. We will definitely be back
I do, but there was not enough time for all. If you know nothing, little, or just want to know more, I totally recommend you go visit. There are so many showcases here ranging from Abraham Lincoln, to Janet Jackson, to stone quarries, to how canal levies work. There was also a poison exhibit when I went, which was super interesting as it had information on all sorts of poisons and how they affect different organisms.
Recommend, but beware...you will be there for a while.
Great museum to learn about the history of Indiana. It has a wide variety of artifacts from all of the history of the state of Indiana. Starting with the natural history of the state you progress to beginning of statehood for Indiana. Historical context of the settlers that traveled through the state through many interactive media. You then move towards the Indiana’s involvement with other major United States historical events such as every major war, the civil rights movement, and industrial changes over time. You finish with famous contributions from local Hoosiers and famous celebrities from the state. The top level is usually reserved for different traveling exhibitions and other temporary events. Overall it is a great place for all ages.
This particular day was an IPS event so parking sucked. The staff were nice.
We visited late on Monday morning, and there were hardly any others. There is a good mix of interactive displays that my (older) kids enjoyed, and behind-the-glass and placard displays that my wife enjoyed. We moved at a moderate pace and spent about 2 1/2 hours in the museum. You could add an extra hour if you like to read everything. Some displays on the first floor are closed until March 2018, but by the time we were done with the third-floor, we were worn out and felt like we got our money’s worth. We found a couple dollars off admission on a Indiana tourist website, and parking was only five dollars with a coupon from the ticket booth. The museum is within easy walking distance of downtown shopping and restaurants.
There is so much to learn about this state, and walking through this museum is like walking through a text book, both because of the depth of information it provides, and the amount of reading.
...Some of you may not like to read...
Our foursome enjoyed the Spooky Science free event this month. Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to arrive downtown, park and get oriented! The museum is beautiful and has lots of interest to kids and adults. Walking the canal is great for people-watching and being situated on Washington Street means you'll be within walking distance to tons of other points of interest.
